This subseries includes handwritten and typed manuscripts generated from Ch’en Shou-yi and other scholars’ works, including Ch’en’s drafts for his papers.

Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: This subseries contains materials relating to participants on the Union side of the United States Civil War. These include a small diary of a Union soldier, documenting primarily marches through Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi; letters from soldiers, including one, in German, from Paul Gmelin, an immigrant who later became a well-known piano manufacturer in New York City, and a series from an Illinois soldier; and miscellaneous commissions, appointments, and discharges....

This subseries has miscellaneous posters covering propaganda against the Nazis, advertisement for a clothing drive, and a message by General Eisenhower to defeated Germans in the United States Zone.

This subseries includes Ch’en Shou-yi’s handwritten and typed notes about literature, History, religion, art, and global politics. Notes are written in Chinese, English, Japanese, French, and other languages. Some notes have materials such as clippings or business cards attached. Notes were removed from Ch’en Shou-yi’s notebooks, and the covers are stored in the miscellaneous box.
